The US Associated Press announced on Wednesday morning the victory of Democratic and Republican candidates for seats in the US House of Representatives, as part of the initial results of the midterm congressional elections, amid ongoing vote counting in various US states.
The results monitored so far show that 15 seats in the House of Representatives have been decided, with 12 going to Democrats and 3 to Republicans, in addition to a Senate seat won by Democrat Mark Warner for the state of Virginia, marking the first race whose result the agency confirmed during the election night.
In Florida, the agency announced the victory of Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz for the 20th district, Oliver Gilbert for the 24th district, and Louis Frankel for the 23rd district, while Republicans Jim Schwartzel for the 19th district and Greg Steube for the 17th district won.
Results in other states
In Georgia, Democrats secured 4 seats, with the victory of Jasmine Clark for the 13th district, Nikema Williams for the 5th, Lucy McBath for the 6th, and Henry Johnson for the 4th. In Ohio, the agency announced the victory of Democrats Joyce Beatty for the 3rd district, Emilia Sykes for the 13th district, and Shontel Brown for the 11th district.
Democrat Morgan McGarvey also won the 3rd district in Kentucky, and Democrat Becca Balint won the only seat for the state of Vermont, while Republican John Rutherford secured the 5th district seat in Florida.
Balance of power
Vote counting and result announcements continue sequentially in elections covering all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the Senate, along with governors of 36 states and local officials. Republicans enter the elections controlling both chambers of Congress, while Democrats seek to seize a majority in at least one, thereby limiting President Donald Trump's ability to pass his legislative agenda over the next two years.
The results of the remaining races are expected to determine the balance of power in Congress, as vote counting continues in several states.
