Democrats Regain Control of the US Congress
Democrats win majorities in both House and Senate in midterm elections amid calls for political and economic change.

The Democratic Party won the US midterm congressional elections held on Tuesday, regaining control of the House of Representatives and seizing a Senate majority from Republicans after winning seven seats previously held by the Republican Party, a shift confirmed by the Associated Press in its election result updates.

The elections included competition for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, as well as 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate, alongside the selection of governors in 36 US states. Before the elections, Republicans controlled the Senate with 53 seats to 45 for Democrats, and the House with 219 seats to 214 for Democrats.

Gains in the Senate and House

Democrats managed to take seven seats from Republicans, achieving victories in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, Iowa, and Maine, according to the Associated Press. In Texas, Democrat James Talariqo defeated Republican Ken Paxton, and in Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Senator Roger Marshall.

The Associated Press announced that Democrats won a majority in the House of Representatives, regaining control after making gains in several electoral districts won by President Donald Trump in the 2024 elections, including districts in Texas, Iowa, New York, New Jersey, and Indiana.

Political Reactions and Polls

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that "Americans expressed their rejection of extremism and corruption, and affirmed their desire for a Congress that works for their interests." Jeffries added that Democrats would work to lower the costs of housing, food, and fuel, and ensure Americans' access to healthcare.

Polls at polling stations showed that about nine out of ten voters considered the cost of living an important or decisive factor in their vote. Reuters reported that about three-quarters of voters expressed anger or dissatisfaction with the direction the country is taking, while disapproval of Trump's performance reached about 62 percent.

Impact of the War and Trump's Stances

US President Donald Trump admitted that the war with Iran played a role in the Republicans' results during an interview with Fox News. Trump stated that Democrats would send legislation disagreeable to his administration to his desk, confirming that he would use his veto power against them.

Trump had previously told the New York Times that he would accept the election results and was ready to work with the Democratic Party. Jeffries is expected to become the Speaker of the House, making him the first Black American to hold this position when the new Congress convenes in January.
