A dialogue seminar held today, Tuesday, as part of the Syria International Security and Safety Exhibition "FORTIX 2026" at the Damascus Fairground, discussed the risks of mines and war remnants, and ways to mitigate their impact on civilian lives. The seminar addressed mechanisms for identifying and surveying contaminated areas, alongside the importance of developing technologies used in mine clearance and enhancing safety standards.
Ahmed Yazji, Director of the War Remnants Clearance and Mine Countermeasures Administration at the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, emphasized that mines pose a continuous threat to civilian lives, causing injuries and human losses. He clarified that the administration's work currently focuses on identifying contaminated areas and danger sites, and carrying out survey and clearance operations to direct efforts toward areas requiring urgent intervention.
For his part, Muhammad Rashid, Deputy Director of the National Center for Mine Action, stated that the seminar highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships with relevant authorities and organizations, and developing the use of modern technology and specialized equipment. He noted that the Center plays a supervisory and coordinating role, working on developing strategies and regulatory standards for mine countermeasures to improve work quality and provide accurate data.
Rashid mentioned efforts to launch an interactive map of mines and war remnants aimed at identifying areas suspected of contamination and those confirmed to be contaminated, thereby supporting the prioritization of interventions in areas related to the return of displaced persons and agricultural lands. He stressed that launching the map does not mean the end of the threat, but rather constitutes a step toward identifying danger sites and directing survey and clearance operations.
Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh had previously affirmed that the National Center is working to implement the strategy developed for mine countermeasures over the next three years, pointing to the imminent launch of the first map of mine distribution in Syria. The exhibition's events began two days ago on Sunday, organized by Wasem Electronic Solutions Company in cooperation with the Ministry, with the participation of government entities and specialized institutions.
