US stock indices closed Thursday's trading with mixed results. The S&P 500 fell by 92.40 points, or 1.19 percent, closing at 7664.77 points. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite dropped by 690.28 points, or 2.58 percent, to 26008.86 points, recording its largest daily loss since June.
In the same context, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 17.51 points, or 0.03 percent, reaching 52873.60 points. The Nasdaq decline came amid pressure on semiconductor stocks, after earnings results from major companies raised questions about the viability of increasing spending on AI technologies and the expected returns.
For its part, Meta Platforms' stock fell after the company recorded outflows for the first time in over a decade, due to its high AI-related expenses, alongside its announcement of plans to issue shares without voting rights as part of a two-to-one stock split. Tesla's stock also declined, despite reporting unexpected positive free cash flow in the quarter and cutting its 2026 capital expenditure plans.
Reports indicated that investors are anticipating the repercussions of ongoing tensions in the Middle East on inflation rates and US monetary policy, with fears that sustained price increases may push the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates.
