Serbian Novak Djokovic bid farewell to the Swiss Indoors Basel Open, a 500-point event, after losing to German Jan-Lennard Struff in two sets to one on Thursday in the round of 16. Meanwhile, German Alexander Zverev secured the top spot in the professional world rankings after reaching the quarter-finals of the Vienna Open.
Djokovic's exit from Basel
Struff, ranked 47th in the world, defeated Djokovic, ranked 12th, after two hours and 35 minutes of competition, with a score of 7-6, 5-7, and 7-6. This marked his first victory over the Serbian star in their ninth meeting, against eight losses. The match was highly competitive, requiring tie-breaks in the first and third sets before the German managed to clinch the deciding set, capitalizing on his strong serve.
Zverev secures the top spot
At the Vienna Open, German Alexander Zverev secured his place in the quarter-finals after defeating Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor in two straight sets, 6-4 and 7-5, in the round of 16. Zverev, aged 29, will take the number one spot in the world rankings when the new edition is released on Monday, November 2, surpassing Italian Jannik Sinner, who had held the top position for 95 weeks.
New records
Zverev becomes the second German player to top the world rankings since their inception in 1973, following his compatriot Boris Becker, who reached the summit in 1991. He will also become the 30th player in ATP history to reach the number one position. Meanwhile, Djokovic continues to chase the record held by American Jimmy Connors, after winning his 102nd professional title this month.
