DR Congo holds out against Portugal and wins a valuable draw
Portugal captain presents  disappointing match

Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo ended in a 1-1 draw in the opening match of Group 16 (K) of the 2026 World Cup, in a result that carried the character of a surprise after the Portuguese team was unable to translate its superiority into victory.

Portugal opened the scoring early through Joao Neves in the sixth minute, taking advantage of Pedro Neto's pass, to give coach Roberto Martinez's team an early advantage and confirm the strong start of "Brazil Europe". However, the Democratic Republic of Congo showed great cohesion and was not affected by the delay, before Yuan Wissa managed to equalize with a header near the end of the first half, scoring a historic goal for his country in the World Cup after a long absence from the tournament.

The Portuguese dominated the ball for most of the game, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes trying to lead the attack in search of the winning goal, but Congolese's solid defensive organisation and goalkeeper Lionel Mbassi's brilliance prevented the result from being changed, and the African team's quick rebounds kept the Portuguese defence under pressure.

Ronaldo has  a disappointing game

In the second half, the Portuguese national team intensified its attempts and Martinez made several attacking changes with the inclusion of Gonzalo Ramos and Rafael Leao, but the Congolese national team maintained its discipline until the final whistle, coming away with a valuable point in its first appearance in the World Cup since 1974, while the Portuguese received an early warning of the need to increase the level of attacking effectiveness in the upcoming matches.

Ronaldo was unlucky in this match, as in the 68th minute, he shot a ball from inside the box that went past the post. In the 74th minute, the Portugal captain missed another chance after a pass from Conceição, and then in the 90+2 minute, Ronaldo headed the ball from the middle of the box but it went past the post.

Bruno Fernandes had a chance in the 90th minute with a left-footed shot from outside the box, but the ball went just wide of the post. Portugal's attacks increased in the final minutes, but lacked precision in the finishing touches.

With this result, each team earned its first point in the group, waiting for the next match between Colombia and Uzbekistan, while the Portuguese team will be looking to make up for this stumble when they face Uzbekistan in the second round, while the Democratic Republic of Congo will hope to build on this positive result against Colombia.
