Drones targeted a transformation power station in the city of Shendi, River Nile state, northern Sudan, on Friday morning, causing a power outage in the city amid rising smoke from the site. Eyewitnesses told the agency that the attack caused the sound of explosions followed by a power cut, while activists circulated videos showing fires breaking out at the station.
Escalation of attacks on infrastructure
This targeting comes a day after a drone attack on the Umm Dabagha thermal power station in White Nile state and the Kadugli power station in South Kordofan state. Several Sudanese states have witnessed repeated drone attacks on power facilities since last Monday, where on Wednesday the power station in the city of Manaqil, Gezira state, central Sudan, was targeted.
Widespread outages and mutual accusations
On Tuesday, the Sudanese Ministry of Energy and Oil announced that electricity was cut off in large parts of several states, including Khartoum and River Nile, due to a power station being taken out of service following an attack attributed to the Rapid Support Forces. On Monday, Sudan Electricity Company announced that the Rapid Support Forces targeted five electricity transformation stations in the states of Sennar, Gadarif, and Gezira.
Sudanese authorities and human rights organizations accuse the Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilian facilities, while the latter usually does not comment on these accusations, stating that it is working to "protect civilians." Since April 2023, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war that has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people.
