The Early Warning Unit in the Ministry of Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management has warned that Tartous Governorate will be affected by a state of atmospheric instability, accompanied by heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and downdraft winds, in addition to rough seas and fog formation. It called on citizens to take necessary preventive measures and comply with public safety guidelines.
For his part, the Tartous Governorate Center mentioned via its Telegram channel that the Unit issued weather and marine alerts indicating that heavy rains and thunderstorms accompanied by downdraft winds will begin on Wednesday evening and continue until Thursday evening. Meanwhile, sea roughness will start on Thursday morning and continue until Sunday, October 18.
The Unit indicated that the chances of fog formation increase from Thursday midnight and during morning hours, which may lead to reduced horizontal visibility. This requires caution while driving and moving on roads, and it called on drivers, pedestrians, fishermen, and beachgoers to comply with public safety instructions.
The National Center for Meteorology and Geophysics clarified that wave heights range between 0.5 and 1.7 meters, with the peak of instability occurring from Thursday morning until Friday morning. During this period, wave height will exceed one meter and reach 1.7 meters, coinciding with winds ranging in speed between 20 and 30 km/h.
The Early Warning and Preparedness Department in the Ministry of Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management appealed for compliance with stopping fishing and sailing operations during this period, refraining from swimming and using rubber boats and light marine recreational means, continuously monitoring children, and not allowing them to approach the sea.
It emphasized the necessity of avoiding proximity to rock barriers, quays, and beach edges during high waves and strong winds, not attempting to rescue anyone in the sea, and immediately contacting rescuers or the coast guard. It also advised avoiding river mouths and low-lying areas prone to water accumulation.
The Department added the importance of not taking risks or approaching the sea for photography during strong winds and high waves, complying with instructions from port directorates, the coast guard, and competent authorities, following official weather and marine bulletins, and exiting the water immediately upon request from competent authorities.
In the same context, the Ministry of Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management warned in a statement yesterday of rough seas off the coasts of Latakia and Tartous governorates, starting from Thursday morning, October 15, until Sunday, October 18, stressing the avoidance of approaching coastal rocks due to the possibility of slipping and high waves.
