Eastern Libya Forces Sign Strategic Cooperation Protocol with Niger
Eastern Libya deputy commander and Saif al-Sharaa sign strategic cooperation protocol with Niger PM Ali Lamine Zein in Benghazi.

Deputy Commander of the Eastern Libya Forces, Saif al-Sharaa, and Niger Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zein, signed a strategic cooperation agreement protocol on Sunday during a meeting in Benghazi, eastern Libya.

This came during al-Sharaa's reception of the Niger Prime Minister, accompanied by a delegation comprising military and political leaders, in the presence of the House of Representatives-appointed Libyan Prime Minister Osama Hammad, according to a statement from the General Command of the Eastern Libya Forces.

The statement clarified that the meeting addressed strengthening bilateral relations and expanding areas of joint cooperation, emphasizing both sides' commitment to continuing consultation, coordination, and monitoring the implementation of the protocol to serve the interests of both countries.

The statement did not specify the areas of cooperation covered by the protocol or the details of its clauses.

This step follows a visit by the Niger Prime Minister to Tripoli last June, where he discussed with Head of the National Government Abdul Hamid Dbeibah enhancing economic and investment partnership, and coordinating on border security, combating organized crime, and irregular migration.

On June 16, the Ministry of Defense of the internationally recognized National Government and Niger signed a memorandum of understanding for military cooperation, during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Salem al-Zanadi and Deputy Minister of Defense Abdul Salam al-Zoubi with the Niger Prime Minister.

The two sides agreed at the time to update a joint liaison point to coordinate cooperation and activate the work of the Libyan-Niger High Committee.

Libya is witnessing political division amid the existence of two governments: the National Government led by Dbeibah in the capital Tripoli, and the other led by Hammad, appointed by the House of Representatives and based in Benghazi.
