Egypt Discusses with Saudi Arabia and UAE Efforts to De-escalate Regional Tensions
Egyptian Foreign Minister discusses with his Saudi and Emirati counterparts ways to contain the crisis and prevent regional escalation.

Egypt held talks with Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the latest regional developments and efforts to contain the current crisis and prevent escalation in the region. This came during two phone calls made by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Tuesday with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan and his Emirati counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed, according to two statements from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

The Egyptian and Saudi ministers agreed to continue consultation and close coordination at the bilateral level and within the framework of the quadrilateral ministerial mechanism, which includes, in addition to the two countries, Turkey and Pakistan. This mechanism aims to enhance consultation on de-escalation and support political solutions to regional crises.

This development comes a day after the Egyptian Parliament approved by a two-thirds majority of its members to authorize President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to take necessary measures to support Saudi Arabia and defend its territory, sovereignty, and holy sites. This comes amid ongoing military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Yemeni Houthi movement since July last year.

For his part, Abdelatty discussed with his Emirati counterpart the latest developments at the regional level, especially with growing signs of potential escalation in the region in the coming period. Abdelatty stressed the necessity of regional countries uniting and mobilizing continuous efforts to reach peaceful solutions and return all parties to the peaceful political track.

The call comes within the framework of mediation efforts to contain tensions between Washington and Tehran, and the continuation of disagreements regarding the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The United States and Israel began a war against Iran on February 28 last year, while Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 last year.
