Egyptian talks with IAEA on nuclear cooperation
Egyptian Foreign Minister discusses peaceful nuclear cooperation and regional developments with IAEA Director General.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held talks on Sunday with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi on cooperation between the two sides in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This came during a phone call aimed at discussing the existing cooperation between Egypt and the Agency, as well as recent developments in regional situations, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The statement indicated that the call addressed the fruitful cooperation between Egypt and the IAEA in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Both sides praised the progress made in implementing the El Dabaa nuclear power plant project in the northwest of the country, as well as the technical support provided by the Agency to Egypt within the framework of its technical cooperation program, which contributes to enhancing national capabilities and benefiting from international expertise in this field.

The El Dabaa nuclear power plant is Egypt's first project for generating electricity using nuclear energy. It is being implemented in the city of El Dabaa in Matrouh Governorate, in cooperation with the Russian company Rosatom. The plant's total capacity is 4,800 megawatts, through four VVER-1200 reactors, with the project cost ranging between 28.5 billion and 30 billion dollars.

In another context, the call addressed recent developments in regional situations amid escalation possibilities. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of urgent action to contain the current crisis and intensify diplomatic efforts to find ways to reach an agreement that contributes to restoring calm. He stressed the rejection of military solutions due to their potentially severe security, political, and economic repercussions on the region and the world, and the necessity of prioritizing political solutions to contribute to maintaining regional and international security and stability.
