Eisenkot Competes with Netanyahu for Israeli Prime Ministership
Former IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot runs against Netanyahu to form a new government and end his long tenure.

Sharp Political Competition

Former Israeli Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot is contesting the legislative elections held on Tuesday, in direct competition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with the aim of removing him from power by forming a new government. Eisenkot (66), who leads the "Yachad" party he founded in 2025, has pledged to form a change government that will end Netanyahu's rule, which has spanned periods totaling more than 17 years.

Military and Political Career

Eisenkot's name is associated with the "Suburb Doctrine," which relies on the use of disproportionate force in Lebanon. He served as Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces between 2015 and 2019. He was elected to the Knesset in 2022 and participated in the War Council managing the genocide in Gaza, where his son Gal and two of his brother's sons were killed during clashes with Palestinian factions in the Strip.

Poll Results and Alliances

Polls indicate that the "Yachad" party is ahead of Netanyahu's "Likud" party, but neither achieves the majority of 61 seats out of 120 in the Knesset required to form a government. Consequently, parliamentary alliances will be a key factor in determining the identity of the next prime minister, amid continued Israeli violations despite the ceasefire agreement announced on October 10, 2025.
