Emergency Minister: Destruction of infrastructure exacerbates difficulty of confronting floods
The Emergency Minister links the difficulty of confronting floods to infrastructure destruction during the war, apologizing for response shortcomings.

Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh confirmed that the years of war waged by the ousted regime and the accompanying systematic destruction of infrastructure have made disaster response more difficult, noting that the floods witnessed in the country caused suffering in several governorates.

Al-Saleh said in a statement published via his account on the 'X' platform today, Monday: "My Syrian compatriots, I am aware of the scale of suffering caused by the floods in several governorates," emphasizing that the years of war waged by the ousted regime and the accompanying systematic destruction of infrastructure have made confronting these disasters more difficult.

Al-Saleh clarified that the ministry, despite the challenges, did everything it could to stand by citizens, in cooperation with the Ministries of Interior and Defense, from early warning and emergency response to reaching affected areas and removing the effects of the floods.

He pointed out that the floods struck simultaneously an area exceeding one-third of Syria's area, posing a major challenge to response operations and access to affected areas.

Minister al-Saleh noted that what the teams provided may not have been sufficient, and that there were citizens who waited for help that did not reach them as quickly as they deserved, expressing his apology to anyone who felt that their needs were not met promptly.

Most Syrian areas witnessed heavy rains from Tuesday afternoon until early Saturday morning, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, leading to the formation of floods and the cutting of many roads.
