The Syrian Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management renewed its reminder of safety procedures and guidelines to be followed in the event of earthquakes, calling for adherence to them to mitigate risks and preserve human safety. The Ministry published these guidelines via its Telegram channel today, Thursday, as part of efforts to enhance community preparedness.
The Ministry clarified the necessity of protecting the head and neck and taking shelter under a table or sturdy object, while staying away from doors, windows, and falling objects. It also emphasized not using elevators and relying on stairs when evacuating a building, as well as avoiding buildings under construction or those that have been shelled, and leaving temporary shelters.
In the same context, the Ministry called for moving to an open area and avoiding bridges if an earthquake occurs while driving. The National Earthquake Center had previously stated that its stations recorded an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale at 10:40 AM today, Thursday, which was felt by residents in parts of northern Syria.
The Center clarified that the earthquake's epicenter was located in the Şanlıurfa province in southern Turkey, approximately 85 kilometers from the Syrian border in the area of Ain al-Arab (Kobani). The National Earthquake Center comprises 27 stations monitoring seismic activity in Syria, while the Ministry works on enhancing the monitoring system and developing scientific infrastructure.
