Emergency Ministry Warns of Rough Seas in Latakia and Tartus
Warning of rough seas from Wednesday morning to Thursday evening with high waves and southwesterly winds.

The Ministry of Emergency Affairs and Disaster Management has warned of rough sea conditions along the coasts of Latakia and Tartus governorates, from Wednesday morning, November 4, through Thursday evening, November 5. The ministry stated in a statement via its Telegram channel on Tuesday that this disturbance will be followed by another disturbance lasting until next Monday.

Wave and Wind Details

The source clarified that wave heights are expected to range between 0.5 and 0.9 meters from Wednesday morning until evening, peaking from Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, where wave heights will reach 1 to 1.4 meters. Heights will then decrease on Thursday morning, with limits remaining at a moderate risk level, ranging between 0.9 and 0.5 meters.

The ministry added that the disturbance is accompanied by southwesterly winds with speeds ranging between 15 and 25 km/h, and unstable weather conditions, with a slight possibility of a sea whirlpool forming. It stressed the necessity of adhering to guidelines issued by the Early Warning and Preparedness Department to ensure citizen safety.

Maritime Safety Guidelines

The ministry pointed out the need to halt fishing and sailing operations during this period, and to refrain from swimming, using rubber boats, and light marine recreational activities. It also called for constant monitoring of children and not allowing them to approach the sea or play near it, and avoiding proximity to rock barriers, piers, and beach edges during high waves and strong winds.

Additional Instructions

The ministry emphasized not attempting to rescue anyone in the sea individually, and immediately contacting rescuers or the coast guard, while avoiding river mouths and low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. It also warned against taking risks and approaching the sea for photography during strong winds and high waves, while adhering to instructions from port directorates and the coast guard, and following official weather and marine bulletins.

Syrian coasts experienced a sea disturbance from Thursday afternoon, October 29, until Saturday morning, October 31, where wave heights exceeded 1 meter and reached 1.5 meters at times, with wind speeds ranging between 20 and 30 km/h and unstable weather conditions.
