Field teams in the directorates of the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management responded yesterday, Tuesday, to a number of reports and incidents resulting from prevailing weather conditions in the Damascus countryside, Tartus, and Daraa governorates. Interventions focused on addressing the effects of rainfall and windstorms, pumping water accumulations from homes and roads, opening damaged roads, removing obstacles and fallen trees, in addition to carrying out rescue and emergency response operations for a traffic accident.
Rescue of a girl and opening roads in Damascus countryside
Youssef Azou, head of the field operations department at the ministry, clarified that the speed of the teams' response contributed to limiting damages, ensuring the safety of residents, and restoring movement and services to normal in affected areas. He pointed out that emergency and rescue teams in the Damascus countryside responded to a number of reports related to weather conditions and their effects, including a wall collapse incident due to a windstorm in the Dof al-Sakher area in Jaramana, which resulted in the death of a woman, and the rescue of a girl trapped on a balcony in the Al-Khader area.
In the suburb of Harasta, teams carried out work to open several roads affected by weather conditions and remove fallen trees that hindered movement, where three trees were removed and roads were reopened to ensure the movement of vehicles and residents. A road in Al-Kiswah was also opened and traffic flow returned to normal after it was closed due to rainwater accumulation. Azou pointed out that on the Damascus-Homs highway, one person was injured and three vehicles were damaged in a traffic accident, where rescue and ambulance teams provided necessary first aid and the injured person was transferred to the Police Hospital and the site was secured.
Opening a road in Tartus
As for Tartus governorate, Azou pointed out that emergency teams responded to a report about a dense accumulation of rainwater that cut the main road and hindered traffic movement in the Qadmous area. The accumulated water was pumped out, the road was opened, and drainage networks and channels were cleaned and rehabilitated to ensure smooth water flow and prevent recurrence, which contributed to restoring traffic to normal and ensuring the safety of pedestrians.
Two homes flooded in Daraa
In Daraa, Azou stated that the governorate witnessed two cases of flooding in low-level homes due to rainfall, with water accumulating inside residential buildings in both Al-Zahraa and Maysaloun neighborhoods, leading to material damage at both sites. The effects of water accumulation were addressed, and necessary measures were taken to limit damages and protect property safety. The country is currently affected by a weather disturbance accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms, with a high probability of hail and strong downdraft winds, which began yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, and is expected to continue until dawn on Saturday, October 31.
