Emergency teams in Raqqa address flood damage in camps
Emergency teams in Raqqa continue to address flood damage in camps after water inundated tents and damaged infrastructure.

Emergency and disaster management teams in the Raqqa governorate continue their efforts to respond to damages caused by heavy rains and floods that hit the area yesterday, which led to the inundation of several tents and damage to some due to rising water levels and drainage systems' inability to absorb the volume.

Abdul Qader al-Saleh, the preparedness and readiness official at the Directorate of Emergency, clarified that the intensity of the rains caused floods that exceeded the capacity of agricultural drains to discharge, confirming that specialized teams are continuing to open and clear channels and drains to limit water accumulation and prepare for any potential emergencies.

Field measures in Al-Maqas camp

Al-Saleh pointed out that the intervention in Al-Maqas camp in the southern countryside of Raqqa included pumping out water and utilizing heavy machinery to rehabilitate the agricultural drain after water breached its embankments, in addition to opening culverts to facilitate drainage, urging residents to stay away from low-lying areas and avoid crossing roads experiencing torrential floods.

Calls to intensify aid

For his part, Thiqal al-Bakkar, a resident of Al-Maqas camp, explained that the rains started at night, leading to the filling of culverts and the inundation of parts of the camp and the collapse of some tents, pointing out the harsh living conditions and emphasizing his appreciation for the rescue teams' efforts while calling for intensified aid to improve the situation of residents.

The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management had announced at dawn that its teams carried out 165 field responses due to heavy rains and floods in the governorates of Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir Ezzor, Hama, Homs, and Latakia, noting that approximately 375 families left the easily constructed camps of Al-Sahlah, Al-Younani, and Al-Maqas in the countryside of Raqqa after they were damaged by flowing rainwater.
