Environmental Seminar in Tartus Discusses Climate Change and Food Security
A seminar in Tartus discusses climate changes, their impact on food security, and international commitments to protect the ozone layer.

An environmental seminar held at the Cultural Center in Tartus on Wednesday discussed climate changes and their repercussions on food security, as well as international commitments related to protecting the ozone layer and ways to transition to eco-friendly technologies and alternatives. The seminar was held in observance of Arab Environment Day and the National Environment Day, under the slogan "We restore our environment... and continue the story," with wide participation from specialists and those interested in environmental affairs in the governorate.

Climate Changes and Food Security

Dr. Saud Abdul Halim Kida, Director of the Center for Manufacturing and Scientific Consultations at Tartus University, spoke about climate changes and extreme phenomena, including unusual rainfall, storms, and changes in ocean and water movements, and their reflections on global food security. He pointed out that addressing these challenges requires relying on scientific data issued by monitoring centers and international organizations concerned with climate, and formulating policies that help countries, institutions, and individuals adapt to climate changes and mitigate their effects on resources and food production.

International Commitments and Ozone Protection

Participants also discussed Syria's commitments under international agreements related to ozone-depleting substances, including requirements to freeze their use, recycle them, gradually reduce them, and transition to eco-friendly alternatives, which includes providing necessary equipment and expertise. In this context, Muhammad Saleh, the Environment Director in Tartus, stated that the upcoming phase requires coordination between government entities, industrial facilities, and individuals to select eco-friendly technologies and equipment and keep pace with international commitments.

Awareness and Community Activities

Saleh emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility, noting that the seminar complements environmental activities in the governorate, which included cleanliness campaigns in the Project Park and Arwad Island, an environmental exhibition in the Old City Hall, and an awareness activity at Rajab Saleh School in cooperation with the Directorate of Education. The seminar included artistic segments and a visual presentation to enhance environmental awareness and community participation in preserving natural resources.
