Erdogan calls for UN Security Council reform and a more just United Nations
Erdogan stresses the need for UN Security Council reform and a more just UN in a message marking the organization's 81st anniversary.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed on Saturday that the world is in greater need than ever of a more just and inclusive United Nations capable of confronting international crises and conflicts and enhancing peace and security. These remarks came in a message from Erdogan on the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, in which the Anadolu Agency quoted him as saying that wars, humanitarian disasters, climate change, hunger, poverty, racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia highlight the growing importance of the role played by the international organization.

For his part, Erdogan emphasized the necessity of reforming the UN Security Council to make it more just and capable of meeting the aspirations of the international community, pointing out that crises and conflicts in various parts of the world, foremost among them the genocide in Gaza, underscore the urgent need for such reform. He noted that the United Nations, founded with the aim of protecting future generations from the scourges of war, has undertaken important responsibilities since its inception in maintaining international peace and security and promoting development.

He added that current international challenges confirm that the importance of the mission for which the United Nations was established is not diminishing, but rather increasing, stressing that humanity still looks forward to a future where wars end and permanent peace prevails, through the application of the common will enshrined in the organization's charter. Erdogan affirmed the importance of countries' commitment to the UN Charter and support for reforms aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of its organs, noting Turkey's support for the "UN 80" initiative launched by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and efforts to transform Istanbul into a UN center.

In the same context, international calls for reforming the organization are increasing amid ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises, particularly the war in the Gaza Strip, alongside challenges of climate change, poverty, and food insecurity. In this context, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres launched the "UN 80" initiative in 2025, aimed at enhancing the organization's efficiency, improving its performance, and rationalizing its resources, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of its founding.
