The European Union condemned the looting and vandalism that occurred in some areas of France, while calling for the protection of the right to peaceful protest and emphasizing the necessity of distinguishing between peaceful protesters and those involved in acts of violence.
Agence France-Presse quoted EU spokesperson Marcus Lamart as saying on Monday: "There should be no confusion between those who protest peacefully and those who commit acts of violence," stressing that arson, looting, and attacks on people and public buildings are "unacceptable."
EU discusses platforms' commitment to digital rules
In a related context, the European Commission announced its continued communication with the French digital communications regulatory authority "Arcom" to explore ways to support it and ensure that social media platforms comply with European rules, particularly regarding content that incites violence.
Thomas Rene, spokesperson for the Commission for digital policy affairs, stated that electronic platforms are obliged to report to the competent authorities, in accordance with existing rules, when they detect indicators of potential criminal activities, noting that a new meeting with the French authority was held today.
These moves fall within the framework of the EU's implementation of the Digital Services Regulation, which imposes obligations on electronic platforms regarding the handling of illegal content, enhancing transparency and cooperation with competent authorities, while respecting fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
The French digital communications regulatory authority "Arcom" plays a supervisory role in monitoring the compliance of digital platforms with the rules in force in France, in coordination with relevant European bodies.
France is witnessing widespread protests against the rising cost of living and the decline of education and public services. Last Saturday, these protests were accompanied by clashes with police and acts of looting and vandalism targeting shops and public buildings in Paris and several French cities, while authorities called for a distinction between peaceful protesters and groups involved in acts of violence.
