European Commission confirms Russian sanctions will remain until war ends
EU Commission president vows sanctions persist until Russia stops war, backing Ukraine with €6.1 billion.

The European Commission confirmed that the European Union's sanctions imposed on Moscow will remain in force until it ends the war with Ukraine, a clear affirmation of the European bloc's firm stance on the ongoing conflict.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated during the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg today, Wednesday: "We imposed energy sanctions on Russia because of its aggressive war against Ukraine, and amid ongoing discussions, I want to be absolutely clear... these sanctions will continue until Russia stops the war."

For her part, the European Commission President pointed out that the bloc is actively working on preparing the 22nd package of sanctions against Russia, noting that the European Union will always remain a safe haven for those fleeing war and persecution, and that the Migration and Asylum Pact has become fully applicable today.

Von der Leyen revealed that the European Union has issued 21 comprehensive packages of economic and diplomatic sanctions against Moscow since the start of the war, with the latest package approved on July 23. Meanwhile, the European Commission approved on September 11 to allocate an additional amount of 6.1 billion euros to Ukraine to strengthen its defense systems within a support loan worth 90 billion euros.

The statements by the European official come at a time when both the Ukrainian and Russian arenas are witnessing mutual military escalation, which has caused widespread destruction of energy facilities and critical infrastructure in Ukraine, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity, alongside casualties on both sides.
