The European Parliament called on Thursday for the European Council to list the Houthi militia, including all its wings and leadership, on the European list of terrorist organizations, along with freezing their assets and dismantling their funding channels, based on a proposal by European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The official website of the European Parliament confirmed that the call came in the wake of escalating threats posed by the militia, noting the Parliament's condemnation of its attacks on Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and neighboring countries, as well as its targeting of commercial ships and energy infrastructure in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait, warning of the repercussions of disrupting navigation on energy prices and the competitiveness of the European economy.
Stance on Iran and Militias
In the regional and security axis, the Parliament condemned the destabilizing role of Iran in supplying the Houthis with weapons and funding, denouncing coordination between them and Hezbollah and other armed factions, and emphasizing the necessity of disarming the militias. The resolution also renewed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the legitimate Yemeni government, calling for enhanced security and defense cooperation between the European Union and its Gulf partners, and supporting the European defensive maritime operation "Aspides" with additional military vessels.
Humanitarian Aid and Legal Measures
On the humanitarian level, the Parliament called on the Houthis to cease hostilities and abandon their expansionist ambitions, expressing concern over the deterioration of the situation in Yemen, and urging the European Union to increase its assistance through the "Global Europe" instrument with strict oversight. The resolution clarifies that the Parliament's call does not lead to automatic listing, as the final decision rests with the European Council in accordance with established legal procedures and standards.
