Everton completed their qualification for the quarter-finals of the English football League Cup after defeating their guests Newcastle United 3-1 on Thursday evening at the "Hill Dickinson" stadium in the fourth round.
Everton's decisive goals
Everton delivered a strong performance in front of their fans and secured the match thanks to goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney, and Frenchman Terrence Boyd, while Dan Burn scored Newcastle's only goal in the final minutes. Both teams imposed a balanced pace in the early minutes, before Garner succeeded in opening the scoring in the 34th minute, taking advantage of a ball that reached him after an attack started with pressure from Tyrick George and a setup from Hackney.
Extending the lead before halftime
Before the end of the first half, Everton extended their lead with a second goal in the 45th minute, when Hackney exploited a precise pass from Boyd and converted it with a direct shot into the net, giving the home side a comfortable advantage before halftime. With the start of the second half, Newcastle tried to return to the match with attacking changes, pushing in the trio of Anthony Elanga, Joelinton, and Yvanni Wesa.
The counter-attack and the third goal
Everton managed to maintain their defensive cohesion despite the improvement in the visitors' performance, before delivering a new blow by scoring the third goal in the 69th minute. The goal came after a fast counter-attack started by Garner intercepting the ball in the midfield, then passing it to Kieran Dewsbury-Hall, who sent a low cross to Boyd, who set it up for himself and shot it powerfully. Newcastle reduced the deficit in the 88th minute through Dan Burn, but the goal came too late and did not give his team enough time to return.
