Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy warned during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Cairo on Sunday that continued Israeli impunity encourages it to persist in violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, Palestine, and Lebanon.
In this context, a statement issued by the Arab League noted that the two sides discussed the situations in Syria, Sudan, and Libya, and affirmed the necessity of preserving the unity, sovereignty, and national institutions of these countries. Fahmy stressed that the credibility of the international system is now measured by what is happening in the Gaza Strip, warning of the fragility of the ceasefire amid the death toll exceeding 1,500 since its implementation.
For his part, Fahmy affirmed the Arab League's firm rejection of the unlawful use of force, including Iranian attacks on the territories of neighboring Arab states, and the continuous attacks by the Houthi militia on airports and civilian facilities, which recently included launching missiles toward the Mecca and Medina regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He pointed to the Arab League's renewal of solidarity with the Kingdom and its right to defend its security and sovereignty, calling on the Security Council to implement its resolutions, and emphasizing the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting also addressed the situation in Lebanon, as the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) nears its end, with Fahmy stressing the importance of avoiding any security vacuum in the south and supporting the Lebanese state in extending its authority over its entire territory.
Guterres added his firm commitment to the necessity of states respecting international law and the UN Charter, expressing his appreciation for the close partnership between the UN and the Arab League. Guterres had called upon arriving in Egypt on Saturday for the treatment of Middle East crises through political and diplomatic means.
