Family Circumstances Differently Affect Children’s Homework Completion
A British study reveals that varying family support impacts children's ability to complete and benefit from homework.

Impact of Family Circumstances

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Manchester in the UK showed that disparities in family circumstances and their ability to assist their children at home directly affect how children complete their school assignments and benefit from them. Some children have greater opportunities to receive additional explanations and academic follow-up, while others face difficulties related to their parents' lack of time or daily responsibilities.

The Gap in Educational Support

The scientific website Phys.org reported on Wednesday that the study examined how differences between families affect the support children receive while completing their homework, with results published in the British Journal of Sociology of Education. Researchers noted that some parents can dedicate time to follow up on lessons and help their children understand them, while long working hours or multiple family responsibilities limit the available time for others.

Challenges of Resources and Time

It added that some families cannot afford private tutoring or additional educational resources, despite their interest in their children's education. The research indicated that limited home assistance does not necessarily reflect a lack of parental interest in their children's education, as it may be linked to work conditions, lack of time, or difficulty explaining certain subjects. The disparity in available home support can reflect on children's ability to complete assignments, even when their academic abilities are similar.

Recommendations for Equal Opportunities

The results emphasized the importance of considering varying family circumstances when designing school assignments, so that children can complete them based on what they learned in class, without their performance depending on the time parents dedicate or their ability to provide additional explanations. The study highlights the importance of designing homework that accounts for the diversity of family circumstances and enhances the school's role in supporting children's learning, thereby providing more equitable opportunities for them to consolidate their knowledge and develop their academic skills.
