The Palestinian National Liberation Movement "Fatah" warned on Tuesday against Israel's continuation of policies aimed at Judaizing occupied East Jerusalem and altering its character, calling for international action to stand in solidarity with Palestinian farmers in the face of escalating settler terrorism. This came in an "urgent political appeal" issued by Yasser Abbas, a member of the movement's Central Committee, to the general secretaries of parties and leaders of political forces in the Arab homeland, the region, and the world.
Abbas emphasized that the "systematic Judaizing policies and continuous attempts to change the Arab, Islamic, and Christian identity and historical landmarks of Jerusalem" constitute "an assault on the sanctity of Islamic and Christian holy sites and the rights of the Palestinian people." He called on political forces to defend Jerusalem and its holy sites, reject attempts to Judaize them, and affirm the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, as well as freedom of worship in both.
For his part, Abbas pointed to the escalation of settler attacks on Palestinian villages and farmers during the olive harvest season, noting the theft of crops and attacks on foreign solidarity activists, Israeli activists, and journalists. He also spoke of the uprooting of thousands of olive trees, confiscation of Palestinian land, demolition of homes, establishment of gates and checkpoints, and imposition of restrictions on movement.
Abbas called for a broad political and popular movement to stand in solidarity with Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest season, providing protection for civilians and supporting initiatives that enable farmers to access their lands. He also requested pressure on governments, parliaments, and international institutions to halt Israeli escalation in the occupied West Bank and to take action for the Gaza Strip.
On Monday, the Palestinian Resistance to the Wall and Settlement Authority announced the documentation of 136 attacks related to the olive harvest season, carried out by the Israeli army and settlers since the beginning of October. Since the start of Israel's genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, attacks by the Israeli army and settlers on Palestinians and their property in the occupied West Bank have escalated.
Overall, the escalation resulted in the killing of more than 1,220 Palestinians, the injury of more than 13,350, and the arrest of nearly 24,600, according to official Palestinian data, by the end of September. In this context, the Central Committee of "Fatah" discussed on Tuesday the political and field developments in the West Bank and Gaza, welcoming the decision to postpone legislative elections, while affirming the importance of continuing national dialogue with various Palestinian forces and factions.
On Saturday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree setting September 11, 2027, as the date for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections, instead of the previous date for legislative elections in November 2026.
