FIFA allows council members to access commercial project documents
FIFA permits council members to review key documents of the failed commercial project amid ongoing governance disputes.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has allowed its council members to access the main documents related to the commercial company project, which was open to private sector investors and was ultimately aborted, sparking a severe crisis within the global football body. A source familiar with the file told AFP on Tuesday about this new measure.

The source clarified that council members, including all vice-presidents, were informed that they would be able to access the main documents related to the "FIFA Forward Enterprise" project. Members who received a message from Secretary General Matthias Kravets expressing their wish to view the documents in person within the next two weeks must do so, under specific conditions at the international federation's headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

This initiative comes as the European football confederation "UEFA," which was at the forefront of opponents to the project, turned to the courts in the US state of Florida to force FIFA-affiliated companies in the United States to hand over a set of documents related to this file. UEFA aims to pave the way for filing a lawsuit in Swiss courts on charges of mismanagement.

Since the project was revealed after the 2026 World Cup, UEFA has been in an open confrontation with Gianni Infantino, who intends to run for re-election to succeed himself in March 2027. In return, UEFA wants him to step down and has issued a series of questions regarding governance, giving him a two-week deadline to respond, a deadline the international federation deemed unrealistic.

After a period of significant pressure, the path has been cleared for Infantino to be re-elected. With the nomination deadline approaching on November 18, UEFA has failed to find a credible figure to compete with the Italian-Swiss official who has held the position since 2016. Infantino received significant support on October 23 when the Asian Football Confederation decided to side with him, after previously being among his opponents.
