Finance Minister Yasser Burhani emphasized the importance of expanding World Bank support for economic recovery and reconstruction in Syria, and stimulating investment and capital flows to the private sector, during his participation in the annual periodic meeting of the Arab Group with World Bank President Ajay Bangha in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
For his part, the World Bank President expressed optimism about the future of the Syrian economy, given the efforts made and their positive impact on the Arab region. These discussions come within the framework of meetings of the Syrian delegation participating in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank held in Bangkok.
He noted that Burhani expressed his appreciation for the development in cooperation with the World Bank and the grants provided to support developmental projects in the energy, water, health, education, and financial sectors. Minister Burhani outlined the progress made in the recovery process in Syria and the continued return of refugees and displaced persons.
He added that the Minister stressed the importance of the World Bank playing a larger role in supporting the private sector, encouraging investments, and facilitating the flow of private capital to Syria, particularly through the International Finance Corporation, while praising the World Bank President's efforts in this field. Burhani also welcomed the establishment of a multi-donor fund to support reconstruction in Syria and the preparation for launching a partnership strategy between the World Bank and Syria, which would enhance cooperation in supporting recovery and development priorities.
The World Bank Group is among the international institutions concerned with financing development and providing technical support, while the International Finance Corporation, a member of the group, plays a role in developing the private sector through investment, mobilizing finance, and providing advisory services. Cooperation with these institutions is gaining importance in supporting developmental projects, stimulating investments, contributing to rehabilitating basic sectors, and enhancing opportunities for economic recovery in Syria.
