Finance Minister Muhammad Yasser Burhani confirmed that Syria's restoration of its presence in international financial institutions, with its official return to the Arab constituencies of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group as of November 1, 2026, represents an opportunity to enhance coordination and cooperation with Arab countries, and expand international partnerships, thereby supporting Syria's economic recovery priorities and financial reform.
Minister Burhani clarified in a post on his Facebook page today, Tuesday, that this return coincides with the expansion of cooperation with the two institutions, including preparations to resume Article IV consultations with the IMF, intensifying technical assistance and capacity-building programs, alongside efforts to establish the Syria Recovery and Reconstruction Trust Fund (START) in partnership with the World Bank Group.
Minister Burhani emphasized that the priority remains translating these steps and international partnerships into tangible economic results, which positively reflect on citizens' lives and support the path of recovery and sustainable growth in Syria. Minister Burhani extended his thanks and appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and the Arab constituencies of the IMF and World Bank Group, for their support of recovery and reform efforts in Syria.
The Ministry of Finance had announced on October 14 that Syria would return to the Arab constituency of the IMF as of November 1, after having been part of the Russian Union constituency since 2012. Also, on October 17, Finance Minister Muhammad Yasser Burhani discussed with Abdulaziz Al-Mulla, Executive Director for the Arab constituency at the World Bank Group, files of cooperation, programs, and ongoing activities between Syria and the World Bank, paving the way for Syria's transition from the Russian Union constituency to the Arab constituency at the World Bank, starting November 1.
