Heavy rains and floods resulting from the weather system that the country experienced over the past two days have caused agricultural damage in the towns of Al-Kabr in eastern Deir Ezzor countryside and Hazima in northern Raqqa countryside, while relevant authorities have begun field inspections and damage assessments to estimate losses and study ways to support affected farmers.
Mohammed Issa Al-Khalifa, head of the extension unit in Al-Kabr town, stated that water flooded approximately 2,500 dunums of land planted with wheat, barley, sesame, corn, and winter vegetables, as well as land planted with olive trees, noting that the Directorate of Agriculture has begun assessing damages and evaluating losses.
For his part, Abdullah Al-Afar, head of the extension unit in Hazima in Raqqa countryside, said that field inspection operations aim to monitor the repercussions of thunderstorms and strong winds, explaining that preliminary assessments in the Bir Al-Hashm area showed damage to approximately 1,000 dunums of cotton with a percentage ranging between 30 and 35 percent, and 800 dunums of yellow corn with a percentage exceeding 40 percent.
He pointed out that winter and summer vegetable crops were exposed to flooding, while a number of affected farmers called for compensation for their losses and measures to prevent the recurrence of flooding in agricultural lands and residential areas. Farmer Khalil Al-Yousef called for addressing damages and cleaning water drains.
The governorates of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by hail and strong descending winds over the past two days, which caused floods, flash floods, and the flow of wadis, leading to the closure of several main and secondary roads.
