Floods in Deir Ezzor cause widespread damage amid government alert
Heavy rains in Deir Ezzor caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage, with government efforts to open roads and rescue stranded individuals.

The heavy thunderstorm that struck Deir Ezzor province yesterday evening Wednesday caused flash floods and torrents, leading to the suspension of many activities and works, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, closing roads, cutting communications, and suspending school attendance and travel between provinces.

Efforts to contain the aftermath of floods

Fayez Abbas, head of the emergency response committee in Deir Ezzor province, reviewed in a statement to SANA today Thursday the government efforts to contain the aftermath of the floods, clarifying that work was underway to open roads in more than one area, open sewers and drain water, and remove obstacles from roads in Hatla, Al-Husseiniya, and Al-Salihiya, in addition to removing a tree from under a secondary bridge in the area of Al-Kabr.

In the area of Al-Tabani, which experienced heavy rains, Abbas pointed out that both the Khan Al-Zahraa bypass and the road were taken out of service, and a family in the Wadi Shihya area was evacuated after water surrounded their home, and they were transferred to a safe place. Abbas confirmed that the situation is generally under control, noting that the province is on full alert, and emergency numbers were disseminated through all official identifiers, urging citizens to exercise the highest degree of caution and care.

Civil Defense rescues stranded individuals and opens damaged roads

In the same context, Osama Arabo, commander of operations in the Emergency Directorate and Disaster Management Department in the province, clarified that Civil Defense teams received appeals from residents regarding the flooding of some homes, responded to them, and implemented the necessary procedures. He added that teams headed to the Deir Ezzor-Raqqa road in the Al-Tarif area after receiving a report of its closure, deploying their teams and machinery to contain the damage and deal with it.

Arabo pointed out the reopening of the Khan Al-Zahraa bridge road near Al-Tabani in western rural Deir Ezzor, while the road between Deir Ezzor and Raqqa in the Ghanim Ali area remains completely cut off due to floods, as well as the road between Homs and Deir Ezzor in the Al-Hraibsha area, due to floods and soil erosion. Arabo noted the rescue of two people in the Al-Hraibsha area by helicopters belonging to the Ministry of Defense, in coordination with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, where elements at the airport provided first aid to them before transferring them to hospitals.

Damage to the optical cable in Deir Ezzor

Regarding the communication outage in the province, Anas Al-Yassin, director of the Deir Ezzor branch of telecommunications, clarified that the outage resulted from damage to the optical cable on the Homs-Deir Ezzor and Aleppo-Deir Ezzor routes, due to floods and rains that the area experienced. Al-Yassin indicated that the outages occurred in the Sukhna area on the Homs-Deir Ezzor road, and the Al-Kabr area on the Aleppo-Deir Ezzor road, noting that the Syriatel network is currently operating at the minimum level of communication services, and workshops have headed to fault sites to perform repairs as soon as they can reach them.

The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management had announced the death of five people, including four children, and the disappearance of five others in the rural areas of Raqqa, Deir Ezzor, and Aleppo, due to floods and rainfall that several provinces experienced, noting the continuation of search operations for the missing. The provinces of Raqqa, Al-Hasakah, and Deir Ezzor, in addition to areas in eastern Homs, Hama, and Aleppo, witnessed thunderous rainfall accompanied by hail and strong downdraft winds, which led to floods, torrents, flowing wadis, and the cutting of several roads.
