Three women were killed and more than 2,000 people were evacuated on Monday as a result of floods caused by heavy rains accompanying Storm "Adam" that swept through eastern Spain.
According to Reuters, citing the "A Pont" radio station, two women lost their lives: one was swept by floodwaters to a beach in Sagunto in the eastern part of Valencia, and the other was swept away in Cabrera de Mar near Barcelona, while members of the military emergency unit found a woman's body in the town of Oliva during rescue operations.
For her part, authorities announced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people, mostly in Oliva, and carried out nearly 100 rescue operations in Valencia and Alicante, where residents were rescued from rooftops by cranes. Helicopters also rescued stranded individuals on roofs, and emergency services rescued residents trapped inside their homes as water levels rose.
Reports indicated that heavy rains caused the closure of many roads in several areas along the Mediterranean coast after rivers overflowed and streets turned into raging torrents. Studies were suspended for more than 100,000 students in the Valencia region, and the government deployed military emergency units and the National Police.
It added that the Spanish Meteorological Agency issued several red warnings, advising locals to avoid travel and seek higher ground, while orders to stay indoors were issued for more than 80,000 residents. This follows floods that hit the Valencia region two years ago, claiming the lives of more than 230 people.
In the same context, meteorological experts stated that climate change resulting from human activity makes such extreme weather events more frequent and destructive.
