Complete Shortage in Warehouses
The Gaza Strip is facing a severe crisis in the availability of bread and flour, with warehouse shortages reaching 100%, leading to the closure of a large number of bakeries. Abdul Nasser Al-Ajrami, head of the Bakeries Association in the Strip, warned that the remaining seven bakeries will cease operations within the next 48 hours if new quantities are not introduced.
Closure of Crossings the Main Cause
Al-Ajrami explained that the crisis resulted from the Israeli occupation closing crossings for the past week and not allowing commercial flour to enter the Strip’s warehouses, despite the partial reopening of crossings. He noted that the flour currently available in markets comes from the World Food Programme (WFP), while commercial bakeries relying on flour imported through crossings have stopped working.
Humanitarian and Economic Implications
Al-Ajrami warned that failing to introduce commercial flour to the Strip will lead to the closure of all bakeries and their inability to provide bread to the population. The flour crisis comes against the backdrop of the WFP’s decision last Monday to reduce aid to more than half a million people in the Strip due to a sharp funding shortage.
The humanitarian and economic crisis in the Gaza Strip is worsening due to the continued Israeli occupation closure of crossings and the imposition of strict restrictions preventing the flow of basic food supplies, fuel, and relief aid, alongside the closure of the Rafah land crossing, which disrupts the evacuation of patients and the wounded.
