Former Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi admitted that bombs dropped by the army killed Israeli prisoners in the Gaza Strip. Halevi made this statement on Sunday at the third annual "Confronting Hate" conference at the Jewish Museum in New York City.
Admission of Mistake
Halevi said during his remarks on this war: "Unfortunately, we made mistakes. Our bombs killed prisoners," according to the Israeli newspaper "Jerusalem Post" on Monday. He added: "Of course, it was not intentional, as we did not know they were there."
Attack Details and Rejection
Halevi described the October 7 attack as "a failure that could have been prevented." However, he rejected claims of "internal betrayal" within the Israeli security establishment that helped "Hamas" carry out the attack. He said: "There was absolutely no betrayal, and it is the political level and state leadership that must say this clearly and without ambiguity."
Military Priorities
Halevi added that the army's priorities before the attack focused on Iran and the Lebanese "Hezbollah," while Hamas was considered a less urgent threat. He continued: "We should have fought a war in Gaza, but our priority order was: first Iran, then Hezbollah."
Legal Context
In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. The International Court of Justice is examining a lawsuit filed by South Africa, accusing Israel of committing genocide.
