The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced that France has temporarily deployed a maritime patrol aircraft to Romania to help monitor maritime risks and enhance the protection of vital energy infrastructure in the Black Sea, at the request of Bucharest.
The ministry stated in a statement on the "X" platform yesterday, Tuesday, that the French Fleet Command in the Mediterranean and Black Sea (CECMED) deployed an "Atlantique 2" maritime patrol aircraft to "Air Base 57" to carry out surveillance and reconnaissance missions until November 6 in the western part of the Black Sea basin.
The statement added that the "Atlantique 2" mission contributes to deterrence operations conducted under the auspices of NATO, highlighting the importance of cooperation among allies, operational interoperability, and the ability to respond to maritime surveillance operations, thereby contributing to ensuring freedom of navigation and saving lives at sea.
It also noted that the presence of maritime patrol aircraft in Constanta, the main port on the coast, presents a good opportunity for the Romanian Navy to train with their French partners, either by boarding the aircraft during their flights over the Black Sea or through joint training activities and information exchange with Romanian warships at sea.
Romania and France are linked by a close strategic partnership encompassing defense, security, economy, and culture. Last July, both sides signed an agreement to purchase "Airbus H225M" military helicopters and "Ground Master 200" multi-purpose air surveillance radars, as part of the European Union's "SAFFI" defense support initiative.
