French authorities announced the start of a partial curfew in the capital Paris, from Saturday until November 2 next, on the background of upcoming protests by the "Yellow Vests" movement with support from trade unions.
The Paris police directorate stated in an official statement that the curfew applies daily between 23:00 and 06:00 local time in the areas of Republic Square and Halle. This decision comes in anticipation of potential violence and looting during the upcoming protests, while authorities banned organizing the demonstration scheduled for today between Bastille and Concorde squares, citing it as a threat to public order.
For their part, spokespersons clarified that authorities allowed the demonstration to be organized between Porte de Bagnolet and Charenton, from 12:00 noon until 18:00 in the evening. Meanwhile, representatives of trade unions and student groups expressed their rejection of changing the demonstration's route during a joint press conference in Paris, considering the decision a restriction on the right to protest and assemble.
The "Yellow Vests" protests, which erupted in opposition to the high cost of living and rising fuel prices, saw movements across France on October 17, 18, and 24. The protests caused damage to more than 2,500 stores, with 1,161 stores suffering serious damage due to looting and arson, especially during the events of October 17.
The "Yellow Vests" demonstrations in France began for the first time on November 17, 2018, in protest against fuel price increases and poor economic conditions, then turned into protests against the social and economic policies of President Emmanuel Macron.
