France Imposes Partial Curfew to Protect Shops
French PM requests partial curfew in some areas to protect shops from chaos after 3,000 were damaged.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced that he has asked governors in certain regions to impose an evening curfew starting Monday, clarifying that the measure will be partial and limited in scope to protect shops following chaos in French cities.

Agence France-Presse quoted Lecornu as saying at the end of a joint ministerial crisis cell meeting that details and locations for the curfew would be announced in the afternoon, following consultations with the relevant mayors.

In the same context, Lecornu pointed out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency if necessary, noting that imposing a curfew appears to be a more suitable option.

The French Prime Minister noted that shops damaged by violence, estimated at at least 3,000, will benefit from a special support fund and measures related to partial unemployment.

The French official indicated that provincial authorities will conduct consultations with mayors and chambers of commerce and industry, as the goal of the curfew is to protect individuals and property, especially shops.

For his part, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that a number of measures will be taken to limit the movements of saboteurs and looters and prevent them from carrying out their activities, starting from this evening.

The minister pointed out that he will reinforce the number of police officers on the ground, especially during the current weekend.

The minister also ruled out the possibility of canceling or postponing upcoming football matches, including the match scheduled for Tuesday between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

The French capital, Paris, and several other French cities witnessed large protests two days ago on Saturday, protesting against the rising cost of living and declining purchasing power, about six months before the presidential elections.

Amid tensions and clashes between protesters and security forces, the country witnessed acts of vandalism targeting official buildings, shops, and public facilities.
