France raises number of detainees in protests to 1,435
French Interior Minister announces arrest count rises to 1,435 amid widespread protests over living and economic conditions.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on Monday that the number of people detained during protests that took place in several areas of France on Saturday has risen to 1,435.

France Press quoted Nunez as saying that about 100 of the detainees were carrying tools that could be used as weapons, noting that knives, billiard balls, glass balls, saws, and firecrackers were seized during searches preceding the demonstrations.

In the same context, the minister pointed out that 150 protesters were injured, three of them seriously, stating that the police have opened internal investigations, as is done every time violent acts occur. Nunez added that the situation remained under control and no serious incidents occurred, despite what he described as an increase in the level of violence against security forces.

According to the General Confederation of Labour, about 800,000 people participated in the demonstrations, while authorities estimated the number of participants at about 410,000, confirming the continuation of the curfew imposed in more than ten areas and readiness to take strict security measures in anticipation of new protests scheduled for next Saturday, coinciding with Halloween celebrations.

The French Interior Ministry had announced on Sunday that 1,314 people were detained and 53 police officers were injured during protests that took place in several areas of the country on Sunday, against the backdrop of rising living costs and declining public services. The protests come within the framework of living movements witnessed in France, amid disagreements over economic and social conditions and government policies.

The country witnessed demonstrations accompanied by clashes and acts of violence on October 17, which resulted in the injury of about 267 members of security forces, according to the Interior Minister.
