The French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies announced in a recent report that French households' confidence fell during the current month to its lowest level since June 2013, based on a survey covering approximately 2,000 households conducted between September 25 and October 19.
Agence France-Presse reported that the index of households' views on future living standards dropped by six points during the current month, while the index related to their assessment of living standards in the recent period fell by three points, reaching its lowest level since the survey began in October 1972.
This decline is primarily attributed to the deterioration in households' assessment of their financial situation, coinciding with growing pessimism among the French regarding the outlook for the national economy, as concerns related to unemployment rise and the proportion of households viewing conditions as suitable for major purchases declines.
Households' outlook on savings remains relatively positive despite its continued decline, with the overall index related to it dropping by two points to reach 118 points, a level still significantly higher than its historical average, while the proportion of households viewing the time as suitable for savings fell for the second consecutive month by six points.
Regarding inflation, the proportion of households perceiving that prices rose significantly over the past twelve months increased again. On the 18th of the current month, Paris and several French cities witnessed large-scale protests against rising living costs and declining purchasing power, amid tensions and clashes between protesters and security forces.
