The Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip announced on Wednesday that the quantities of oil required to operate hospital generators have run out, warning of the risk of vital and life-saving departments shutting down. This announcement comes amid continued Israeli restrictions on the entry of operational and maintenance supplies, threatening the collapse of the remaining health system.
Escalation of Fuel and Oil Crisis
The warning follows the Ministry's announcement on September 16 last year that 70 percent of hospital electricity generators were out of service due to shortages of fuel, oil, and spare parts caused by the Israeli siege. The Ministry confirmed in a statement that the depletion of oil means "immediate mechanical breakdown and wear" of the remaining generators, which operate in "complex engineering and technical conditions."
Massive Monthly Needs
The Ministry clarified that the hospitals' needs for oil to operate generators exceed 2,500 liters per month. It pointed out that it had repeatedly warned that "emergency solutions" based on providing limited quantities of oil do not ensure the continued operation of generators, given their increasing consumption of oil due to long working hours and their urgent need for maintenance.
Complete Dependence on Generators
The Ministry called on relevant authorities to assume their humanitarian responsibilities and intervene immediately to ensure the entry of oil and spare parts necessary to continue operating hospital electricity generators. Gaza hospitals rely on electrical generators to provide the energy needed to operate medical devices and vital departments, since Israel cut off electricity supplies to the Strip in October 2023.
The crisis is worsening despite the ceasefire agreement taking effect since October 2025, amid continued Israeli restrictions on the entry of supplies needed to rehabilitate the health system, which suffered widespread destruction during the genocide war Israel launched on the Strip since October 2023.
