Gaza Health Ministry Warns of Hospital Generator Shutdown
Gaza's Health Ministry warns that hospital generators may stop due to fuel shortages and Israeli import bans.

The Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip warned on Thursday of a sudden stoppage of electrical generators in hospitals due to the complete depletion of operating oils, noting that Israel prohibits their entry into the sector. The ministry confirmed in a statement that engineering teams are working under complex technical conditions to monitor the generators and attempt to keep them running to supply vital departments with electricity.

Continuous Drainage and the Danger Point

The ministry added that the continuous drainage of generators and their operation for thousands of consecutive hours without oil or maintenance has brought them to the "last mechanical danger point." It confirmed that the burning of generator engines due to the absence of oil means a permanent loss of the ability to operate them, even if oil becomes available later.

Urgent Need for Oils

For its part, the ministry announced on Wednesday the depletion of oils necessary to operate electricity generators in hospitals, emphasizing its urgent need for more than 2,500 liters monthly to prevent the collapse of remaining generators, amid Israeli restrictions on importing operating and maintenance supplies. It pointed out that the continuation of the crisis threatens to stop life-saving medical departments, after it announced on September 16 that 70 percent of hospital generators were out of service.

Essential Dependence on Generators

It noted that Gaza hospitals rely on generators as a primary source of electricity to operate operating rooms, intensive care units, infant incubators, ventilators, and dialysis machines, since Israel cut off electricity supplies to the sector in October 2023. The ministry called on relevant authorities to assume their humanitarian responsibilities and intervene immediately to ensure the entry of oils and necessary spare parts to prevent the shutdown of remaining generators.

Crisis Continues Despite Ceasefire

The electricity crisis continues despite the ceasefire agreement being in effect since October 10, 2025, amid ongoing Israeli restrictions on importing supplies needed to rehabilitate the health system in the sector. The ministry did not clarify whether the depletion of oils has caused the stoppage of medical departments, or the duration for which generators can continue to operate with the oil remaining inside them after the necessary stock for replacement and maintenance is exhausted.
