Discussion of Purchase Procedures
The General Authority for Crossings and Customs and the Daraa Regional Administration met on Monday with several property owners designated for the construction of the March 18 Border Crossing to discuss the procedures for purchasing the land required for the project. Tamim Sawaghi, Deputy Director of the General Authority for Crossings and Customs for Crossing Affairs, confirmed during the meeting that the Authority will work to expedite procedures and remove obstacles in the purchasing process, noting that land purchase contracts will be prepared in parallel with completing the necessary legal and administrative procedures.
Details of Targeted Properties
The Daraa Governorate stated on its Telegram channel that the number of properties targeted for purchase amounts to 10 properties owned by 83 individuals, with a total area of 2,299,421 square meters, approximately 230 dunams, at a price of $5,000 per dunam. Sawaghi called on property owners to begin inheritance inventory procedures and complete the required documents, as well as to organize necessary legal powers of attorney for those outside Syria, ensuring transactions are completed according to established protocols and accelerating the purchasing process.
Purchase Mechanism Outside Expropriation Law
For his part, Daraa Regional Director Mohammad Abu Dibbus clarified that the meeting follows a series of meetings held over two months between the Regional Administration and property owners, aimed at reaching a mechanism for purchasing the land required for the project. Abu Dibbus indicated that the purchase will be made in favor of the General Authority for Crossings and Customs, outside the expropriation law that was enforced during the former regime, by purchasing the properties from their owners and completing the necessary legal procedures.
Reopening of the Crossing
The head of the General Authority for Crossings and Customs, Qutaiba Badawi, and Daraa Governor Anwar Taha Al-Zoubi agreed on July 7 to reopen the old Daraa customs office under the name March 18 Border Crossing, in commemoration of the anniversary of the launch of the Syrian Revolution.
