The General Establishment for Road Transport under the Ministry of Transport is implementing a comprehensive plan for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the central road network in several Syrian governorates. This includes repairing damaged axes, rehabilitating bridges and road structures, widening roads, and creating new lanes. These vital projects contribute to raising the level of road safety, improving the flow of transport, and enhancing connectivity between governorates, border crossings, and seaports.
The General Manager of the Establishment, Engineer Moath Najjar, emphasized in a statement to SANA correspondent on Thursday that the ongoing projects combine periodic and emergency maintenance works with rehabilitation and strategic development projects, prioritizing vital axes of economic and commercial importance. Najjar noted that the Establishment is working to address damages to the road network, raise its operational efficiency, and improve its capacity to accommodate increasing traffic movement.
Damascus and its countryside
Najjar clarified that maintenance works on the Damascus International Airport road continue along a stretch of approximately 21 kilometers in each direction, surpassing more than 44 percent of the completion rate. Maintenance works include milling old asphalt, relaying new layers, repairing metal barriers, maintaining lighting and concrete curbs, road marking, installing warning and informational signs, painting bridges, rehabilitating sidewalks, implementing printed concrete, and carrying out landscaping works. Furthermore, the road maintenance plan in the countryside of Damascus targets approximately 650 kilometers out of the central road network in the governorate, which totals around 900 kilometers.
International and regional axes
Regarding the development of international axes, Najjar explained that the maintenance and rehabilitation project of the Nisib-Damascus road has entered the preparation stage for field implementation, with machinery and engineering equipment arriving at the work site after the project was awarded to the Kuwaiti Joint Contractors Group company at a cost of approximately 46.8 million dollars and an implementation duration of around 400 days. The project aims to rehabilitate a section approximately 100 kilometers long, consisting of four traffic lanes. Regarding the Damascus-Tadmur-Deir Ezzor road, Najjar pointed out that surveying and preparatory works have begun, and engineering equipment, machinery, and supplies for starting field implementation are being supplied to rehabilitate this road, which has a total length of approximately 425 kilometers.
Northern governorates
In Latakia governorate, the completion rate of the Latakia-Ariha highway rehabilitation project has exceeded 80 percent, with completion expected by the end of the current year. In Aleppo governorate, the General Establishment for Road Transport is executing four projects for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Aleppo-Gaziantep road, aiming to improve the road's condition, raise the level of road safety, and enhance connectivity between the city, its northern countryside areas, and border crossings between Syria and Turkey. In Idlib governorate, a vital project is underway to rehabilitate and widen the Idlib-Ariha road, which is considered one of the most important strategic roads in the governorate.
