The German Army warned in an internal document of an increasing risk of Russian sabotage attacks targeting the German armed forces within the country, classifying the threat level as "high." This classification, which is the second highest level on the military threat assessment scale, comes in the wake of incidents involving drones suspected of being equipped with explosives near military installations and strategic sites in Germany.
Drone Incidents
The German newspaper "Die Welt" reported that last August, a drone was found at Leipzig Airport, suspected of being prepared to target Ukrainian cargo planes, before another drone was discovered near the Wunstorf Air Base, believed to be targeting German Air Force aircraft.
Strategic Targets
According to the German Army, these incidents indicate that Russia may have possessed the capability to target German forces and military installations for some time, with a likely increase in its intention to carry out such operations, including targeting Ukrainian interests within Germany. It is suggested that the goal of these activities is to weaken German political and social support for Ukraine.
Expected Escalation
The Army warned that the use of drones in sabotage operations may indicate a shift in the threat towards causing direct physical damage to German forces and installations. It pointed out that German intelligence agencies expect an escalation of tensions in the near future, given the growing indicators of Russian activities targeting Germany and its allies.
The head of Germany's foreign intelligence agency, Martin Jaeger, recently warned of an escalating confrontation with Russia, amid growing security risks associated with sabotage activities and hybrid attacks.
