German study: Quercetin compound limits lung cancer cell growth
Preliminary German study shows quercetin limits lung cancer cell growth in lab and animal experiments.

A German study has shown that the compound quercetin, found in onions and citrus fruits, contributed to slowing the growth of lung cancer cells and limiting their migration in laboratory experiments and on mouse models, in preliminary results that highlight its potential in cancer research.

The scientific website Medical Xpress reported the day before yesterday, citing a study published in the journal Cell Death Discovery, that researchers from Erlangen University Hospital, affiliated with Friedrich Alexander Erlangen-Nuremberg University in Germany, studied the effect of the compound on cancer cells and observed changes in several indicators associated with tumor growth.

The experiments showed that quercetin limited the division of cancer cells and their ability to migrate, and the effect was greater when using high concentrations of the compound in the laboratory. The results showed that the compound affected levels of proteins associated with tumor growth and their ability to evade the immune system, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and the protein (PD-L1), as researchers also observed a decrease in oxidative stress in one type of lung cancer cells included in the study.

Researchers also observed indicators of a decrease in the number of tumor foci in mice, but the small number of animals that developed tumors limited the ability to draw conclusive conclusions about this effect. Researchers emphasized that the results are still preliminary, and that laboratory and animal experiments do not prove the effectiveness of quercetin in treating lung cancer in humans, necessitating further studies to determine the extent of its impact and its potential for therapeutic use.

Lung cancer is a disease that occurs as a result of the growth of abnormal cells in lung tissues and their uncontrolled division, leading to the formation of tumors that may impair lung function and can spread to other organs in the body.
