Germany arrests Ukrainian on suspicion of spying for Russia
German authorities arrest Ukrainian suspect for espionage for Russian intelligence since July 2025.

The German Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Thursday the arrest of a Ukrainian citizen suspected of spying for Russian intelligence and gathering military information. The news agency AFP quoted the prosecutor’s office as saying the suspect, identified as Vadim Y, collected information on the production of armored vehicles, ammunition, and explosives, as well as data on military personnel and facilities in locations linked to strengthening the Eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance.

The prosecutor’s office clarified that the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested the suspect in the Oder-Spree district of Brandenburg state, east of Berlin, based on information provided by the German domestic intelligence agency. It added that the suspect had been in contact with a Russian intelligence agency through an intermediary since at least July 2025, noting that he gathered military information for the agency amid the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The prosecutor’s office pointed out that the information gathered included publicly available data, as well as his attempts to obtain additional information from individuals working in the European defense industry. Berlin accuses Moscow of carrying out espionage, sabotage, and other moves it describes as threatening stability, while Russia denies these allegations.

For his part, the head of German foreign intelligence, Martin Jaeger, had previously warned of an escalating so-called Russian "shadow war" against Germany and its allies, considering it to be taking on a more dangerous character, and cautioned against the possibility of Germany being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia.
