An alliance comprising major global media institutions announced on Tuesday the commencement of unified collective action to confront the challenges of artificial intelligence. This coalition aims to negotiate with companies developing AI technologies to ensure fair financial compensation for the use of their journalistic content.

On its part, the coalition, co-founded by prominent British institutions including the BBC, Sky News, and The Guardian, stated that it "brings together publishers to create a fair market for the use of content by AI systems." The alliance is joined by the Agence France-Presse (AFP), Radio France, The New York Times, and approximately forty other media outlets and organizations.

It was noted that new members have raised the number of "SPOR" alliance members to over eighty. These institutions include Lequipe, The Atlantic, The Observer, and The Economist, as well as publishers' associations from Brazil, Japan, Argentina, and Colombia. The coalition seeks to develop a technical infrastructure that enables publishers to measure how AI systems exploit their content.

In this context, Fabrice Fraysse, Chairman of the Board of AFP, said in a statement: "AI assistants answer questions from millions of people daily using information that news agency journalists were often the first to gather and verify... The value of this original work must be recognized, its source cited, and payment made for it."

Sources added that The New York Times has initiated lengthy and costly legal proceedings in US courts against OpenAI and Microsoft on charges of intellectual property rights infringement, but has also reached an agreement with Amazon in the field of AI. Meanwhile, other institutions such as News Corp, Le Monde, and The Washington Post have formed partnerships with OpenAI, while AFP has entered into a partnership with the French company Mistral.
