Google announced a set of new security updates for Android users, primarily relying on artificial intelligence technologies to detect suspicious messages and links, and to curb attempts at electronic fraud and the theft of personal and banking data.
The tech site Android Authority reported the day before yesterday that the updates include employing the Gemini AI model to analyze suspicious messages within the Messages app, alongside developing mechanisms to verify links and protect users from fraudulent calls and call forwarding without their knowledge.
Smart Message Analysis
The feature powered by Gemini allows for the analysis of conversation patterns and the identification of fraud indicators, including messages where the sender initiates contact under the pretext of sending a message to the wrong number, before attempting to gain the user's trust and lure them into sharing personal or financial information.
Google clarified that message analysis is performed on the device using AI technologies, aiming to enhance privacy and limit other parties' access to conversation content. The company is also working to use the Gemini Nano model to scan for risk indicators in links within the Messages app before the user opens them. These capabilities will be available on specific Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, as well as other supported devices.
Protection Against Fraudulent Transfers
The updates also include developing warnings related to links received from unregistered numbers, and working to display alerts regarding suspicious conversations directly within notifications. Additionally, there are features aimed at hiding sensitive data, such as passwords, banking information, and card numbers, when sharing the screen on supported devices.
In the context of combating phone fraud, Google is working to enhance protection against the activation of call forwarding without the user's knowledge, by monitoring manipulation attempts aimed at pushing them to enter codes that could result in forwarding their calls to other numbers.
These measures fall within the company's efforts to expand the use of artificial intelligence in enhancing smartphone security, by detecting fraud indicators and warning users before interacting with suspicious messages, links, or calls.
