Google announced the expansion of its Android earthquake alert system to cover more than 200 countries and regions worldwide, compared to the approximately 98 countries and regions it previously covered. This expansion coincides with the company's ongoing efforts to develop alerts and add interactive maps and information to help users understand the scope of earthquakes and better prepare for potential tremors.
The tech site "Android Headlines" reported on Friday that the system relies on accelerometers in Android phones to detect vibrations that may indicate an earthquake. This technology allows phones to contribute to vibration detection, as the accelerometer can detect unusual movement, after which the data is analyzed to determine the likelihood of an earthquake and send alerts to devices near the affected area.
The report noted that the system includes different alert levels appropriate to the nature of the risk. Since the feature was launched in 2021, Google has gradually expanded its scope to new regions, including Panama and Guatemala. The company is also developing the "Be Ready" alert by adding a map showing the geographic area where vibrations were detected, along with information helping users estimate the area affected by the earthquake.
It added that the alert includes basic safety guidelines, such as dropping to the ground, taking cover under sturdy furniture, and holding on until the shaking stops. The new improvements will be rolled out to users gradually over the coming months. It is worth noting that alerts do not guarantee a warning before every earthquake, as this depends on monitoring conditions, connectivity, and the timing of vibrations reaching the area.
