Google tests running Gemini assistant offline
Google is developing a feature to run the Gemini Live voice assistant locally on smartphones without an internet connection.

Google is working on developing a feature that allows its voice assistant, "Gemini Live," to be used without an internet connection, which may enable users to have voice conversations with the assistant relying on local processing on smartphones.

New software indicators

The technology news website "Android Authority," in a report published yesterday Saturday, stated that an analysis of version 17.71.17 of the Google app on the Android system revealed software indicators pointing to the development of a new mode that allows running "Gemini Live" without a network connection, while the company has not officially announced details about the launch date or the mechanism of operation of the feature.

Local processing capabilities

"Gemini Live" allows users to have interactive voice conversations with the "Gemini" artificial intelligence assistant, with the ability to take advantage of additional features, such as sharing the camera and screen, to get direct assistance regarding what appears in front of the user. The capabilities that the new feature will provide upon its launch have not yet become clear, or whether it will support camera and screen sharing, as running these functions without an internet connection requires data processing on the device itself.

Miniature AI models

The report indicated that running the assistant locally may allow executing some basic tasks, relying on small artificial intelligence models, such as "Gemini Nano," which are present in some modern Android phones, although performance may be slower or less accurate compared to the version that relies on cloud computing. This development comes within the framework of the continuous updates Google is making to "Gemini Live," as the company added new features in the past period, including camera and screen sharing, and real-time translation, aiming to expand the uses of the voice assistant and improve interaction with it.
